This looks horrifying. And i don’t mean the movie looks bad (it does, but i’ll talk about that in a second), i mean the 3D animation for Spongebob and his friends looks like the kind of thing that will haunt children’s dreams for years. Who ever decided that that was a good idea, never make a movie ever again. Anyways..,now that that image is out of my head i think i can go on.
I never really liked Spongebob. I just didn’t care for the show at all, even though i was about the right age for it when it first started. That disinterest meant that when the 2004 movie was announced i also, didn’t care about it, although i did end up seeing it. The first part of this trailer had me thinking it would be more like that movie. Something more akin to a 90 minute episode rather than the abomination it turned into. And yes, i think that would have been the better way to go. But after four “Alvin and the Chipmunks” movies and two “Smurfs” movies, the pattern is clear. They are making this movie like this so they can add in pointless celebrity cameos and have adds popping out at you whenever possible. And when i said “pointless”, i really meant that. “Alvin and the Chipmunks” and “The Smurfs” really weren’t relevant anymore when their movies were being made, some star power was probably needed in order to generate interest and the adds probably paid more most of each movie, as i can’t imagine investors lining up to take a chance on “The Smurfs”.
Spongebob, on the other hand, isn’t like that. There still is, for whatever reason, a pretty big fan base for this show. Sure, it’s not as big as it once once, and it probably isn’t even as big as “Adventure Time” is right now, but i still know people who do still genuinely enjoy Spoungebob. So, what is the point of making a film for him the same way you would other, less relevant characters?
